The Power of Peer Support

Recognizing the invaluable expertise that individuals with shared lived experiences bring to our community.

Peer Support Program

Welcome Centre Shelter is proud to embrace the transformative power of peer support, recognizing the invaluable expertise that individuals with shared lived experiences bring to our community. Peers are individuals with equal standing who offer crucial perspectives and a reality check to our agency and programs. In our Peer Support Program:

  • Expertise from Lived Experience: Peers within the centre are self-identified women from the Windsor community who have lived experience with homelessness and substance use. They bring a deep understanding of the challenges those accessing our shelter services face.
  • Comprehensive Support Services: Our peers offer multifaceted support to shelter service users, including:
    • Advocacy/Connecting with Resources: Assisting individuals in navigating community resources and advocating for their needs.
    • Harm Reduction Support/Supplies: Providing harm reduction support and necessary supplies to promote safer practices.
    • In-the-Moment Support: Addressing shelter issues and concerns promptly and effectively.
    • Community Referrals: Connecting individuals with relevant community services and support networks.
    • Positive Nonjudgmental Support: Offering encouragement and positive, nonjudgmental support during shelter stays.
    • Naloxone Training/Information: Providing training and information on administering Naloxone for opioid overdoses.

Our Peer Support Program is grounded in the belief that individuals with lived experience are essential allies in creating an inclusive and supportive shelter environment. Our peers contribute significantly to the well-being and empowerment of those we serve through their expertise.
